HONGKONG, JANUARY 28TH, 1880.

MACAO.

FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT]

25th January. We do certainly live in the age of surprizes and inventions! Suffice it for me to announce the fact of the visit of E.. the Viceroy of the Two Kwang to verify my assertion. Yes, Macao was unexpectedly honoured with the presence of such a high personage. In the memory of man, no Viceroy has even come here and perhaps ever thonght of having a glance at or a photagraph of Macao. It was even said that the relations between the present Governor of Macao and Viceroy Liu were anything but friendly and that a rupture was imminent. E. the Vioeroy has of his own accord, without any official invitation or intiuation, come here to pay a friendly visit to Governor Graça, whose personal acquaintance he desired to niske. At 9.30 a.tn., under a salute from the Barra Fort, a mountain battery, and a guard of honour, the Viceroy and suite landed and escorted by a piquet of nouuled police pro- coeded to Government House, and was received by E. the Governor, the Consuls, and the military and civil authorities, the reception last- ing till nearly one o'clock, when Governor Graça accompanied his illustrious guest to the Chinese gan-vessel in the inner harbour, flying the Viceroy's flag.

From what I could see and learn afterwards. the meeting may be productive of much good to this city, and perfect entente has been estab Tished on several points.

During the reception the Viceroy more than once asserted that his visit to Macao was due solely to his desire to know personally the i courteous Governor with whom he had been in such friendly correspondence. All höfttany there- fore, to our popular Governor, who may justly be proud of the visit of such a high personage.

I may add that the Viceroy extineted a pro- mise from Governor Graça that should His Ex- cellency, as Minister Plenipotoutiary, have oc casion to go to Peking, he would pay him a visit at Nauking, the capital of the Two Kiang pro- vinces over which the Viceroy has been ap- pointed to rule.
